Lichens come in many designs and styles. Some are small and hard to see, others grow large and decorate the substrate. Substrate is the name for the surface lichens grows on. Many species of lichens form a long pendent body or thallus. Others grow closely attached to the substrate such as rocks or bark making them look much like paint on the surface. Many lichens seem to do best when growing among mosses or on rotting wood or forest soils. They are attached with small growths called rhizines. You can learn more about these characteristics and others by continuing to search the links from these pages.
