Lichens with podetia look like they have fingers poking out of the ground or tree bark. They grow from a scruffy surface called a primary thallus which is made up of many small squamules. You can find lichens like this covering old logs and along the ground in forests.
This Cladonia lichen has squamules over most of the podetia. The bright red tops are fruiting bodies called apothecia. Note the other thin wispy lichens growing with the Cladonia; they are related, but in a different group.
