Lichens with podetia look like they have fingers poking out of the ground or tree bark. They grow from a scruffy surface called a primary thallus which is made up of many small squamules. You can find lichens like this covering old logs and along the ground in forests. |
This Cladonia lichen has squamules over most of the podetia. The bright red tops are fruiting bodies called apothecia. Note the other thin wispy lichens growing with the Cladonia; they are related, but in a different group. |
