The upper and lower surface texture of lichens varies considerably. Sometimes they are smooth, or rough (scabard), sometimes they have a veined-like appearance; the surface may be covered with hairs or fuzz, or may be bare. These two images show the top and bottom of the same species of Lobaria. The upper surface is vein-like. Species of Peltigera are veined on the lower surface.
